What is shadPS4?

shadPS4 is a free, open-source PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS. It is written in C++ and released under the GPL-2.0 license, which means anyone can read, study and improve its source code. Development started in 2022, and the first public release followed in 2023. Since then the project has grown quickly, with an active community of contributors and new builds released regularly.

The emulator is still in an early stage. Some games run well, many run with glitches, and others don’t start at all. The developers are open about this, so treat shadPS4 as a fast-moving project rather than a finished replacement for a PS4 console. That said, the progress has been impressive: popular titles such as Bloodborne, Dark Souls Remastered, Red Dead Redemption, Yakuza 0 and DRIVECLUB have been shown running on PC.

Key features

  • Cross-platform: a single project for Windows, Linux and macOS.
  • Vulkan renderer: modern graphics output that can take advantage of current GPUs.
  • Controller support: with a Big Picture Mode for playing from the couch.
  • Local multiplayer: support for supported titles.
  • Screenshot capture: and a flexible configuration system with per-game settings.
  • Free and open source: no ads, no subscriptions and no paid “premium” versions.

Supported platforms

  • Windows: Windows 10 or newer.
  • Linux: Ubuntu 22.04 or equivalent.
  • macOS: macOS 26 or newer on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are not supported.

System requirements

PS4 emulation is demanding because your computer has to translate the console’s hardware behaviour in real time. As a general guide, you will want:

  • CPU: a modern multi-core 64-bit processor. Faster cores make a noticeable difference.
  • GPU: a graphics card with Vulkan 1.3 support and up-to-date drivers.
  • RAM: 16 GB is recommended for a smoother experience, especially with larger games.
  • Storage: an SSD is strongly recommended, as PS4 games are large and load faster from solid-state drives.

Lower-end systems may still run lighter titles, but expect lower frame rates in demanding 3D games.

Before you start

  • Update your graphics drivers. A GPU with Vulkan 1.3 support is required.
  • The downloads on the project’s releases page are the command-line emulator core. The project also offers a separate graphical launcher; see the official website for details.
  • Always download from the official project sources only. The buttons on this page open them directly; nothing is hosted here.
  • Extract the program into a folder that does not need administrator rights.

How to get started

  1. Download the build for your operating system using the buttons on this page. They take you to the official release page.
  2. Extract the archive into a regular folder, for example inside your Documents or home directory.
  3. Install the launcher (optional) if you prefer a graphical interface for managing your game library.
  4. Add your game folder in the settings so shadPS4 can find your legally dumped games.
  5. Configure your controller and adjust graphics settings if needed.
  6. Launch a game and check the compatibility list if it fails to start, since some titles need specific settings or a newer build.

Using your own games

shadPS4 does not include any games, and flosshype does not provide or link to game files. To play, you need to dump games you legally own from your own PlayStation 4. Downloading copyrighted games you don’t own is illegal in most countries, including India, and files from unofficial sites are a common source of malware. shadPS4 is not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Compatibility

Game support changes with every release. The project keeps an official compatibility list on its website, which is the best place to check how a particular title currently runs. Games are usually grouped by how far they get, from not booting at all to fully playable. If a game you want isn’t playable yet, it’s worth checking back after future updates, because each release often fixes many previously broken titles.

Tips for better performance

  • Keep shadPS4 updated. New builds frequently bring major compatibility and speed improvements.
  • Close background apps, especially browsers and other games, to free up CPU and memory.
  • Plug in your laptop and use a high-performance power mode.
  • Expect first-run stutter. The emulator builds shaders the first time it sees them, so the first session in a game is often less smooth than later ones.
  • Check per-game settings recommended by the community on the compatibility list.

Is shadPS4 safe?

The official builds are open source and published openly on GitHub, where anyone can inspect the code. The risk comes from fake copies: websites offering “shadPS4 APK” for Android, “pre-loaded” packs with games included, or modified installers. There is no official Android version. To stay safe, only download through the official links on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is shadPS4 free?
Yes. It is completely free and open source, with no paid version.

Can shadPS4 run on Android?
No. There is no official Android build. Any shadPS4 APK you find online is not from the developers.

Is using an emulator legal?
Emulators themselves are legal software. What matters is where your games come from, so only use games you have dumped from discs or purchases you own.

Why does my game crash or show glitches?
Many titles are still in progress. Update to the latest build, update your GPU drivers and check the compatibility list for known issues.

The system requirements section stays general on purpose because the project’s official recommendations can change between releases. If you want exact numbers, have Claude Code check the current README and fill them in.
